How can I set up a field size to its content. I have a text field containing as for length very different texts. When creating a report in preview mode I would need the field to be changeble and be able to fit to content.

I tried to make the field as big as largest recort and use "slide" options but this makes empty pages at the end in preview mode as my fields goes across to many page breaks in browse mode

Sliding Objects slides through unused field space. In order to reduce the white space left behind when a field is reduced to the content, you also need to check the sliding option to reduce the size of the enclosing part.
