Oldsneekers Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 I have OS 10.4.8 and FM 8 server on G5 mac. I just converted a FM5 solution to FM8 and the whole thing runs well on a single computer. I transfered the folder with all the files into the data folder inside FM server folder. I opened the solution from a client on the network but it will not open that one file which was previously accessable while running outside the Server. It does open all the other files in the folder though. Prior to conversion, I did "recover " the file successfully. So, why won't the server open that only lone file. Thanks in advance for all those great minds that take time out of here busy day to answer the needs of us, weaker minded souls. GW
Steven H. Blackwell Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Prior to conversion, I did "recover " the file successfully. And then what? Don't continue to use recovered files. Check to see if the file failed its consistency check. Look in the Server Log to see. Also be sure that the fmapp bit is checked in the Privilege Set attached to the Account that you are using. If it is not, then the file cannot be accessed via the network. Steven
Oldsneekers Posted October 6, 2006 Author Posted October 6, 2006 No luck so I shelled out the 45 bucks to talk to the guys at FM tech support. They suggested to "save a copy as" a compacted copy then recover it. I put it back into the FM server and held my breath then ... it worked. After I danced for a minute, I called it a day. Thanks for all that have look and thought on my behalf and I hope this helps others in my previous predicament. Greg.
Steven H. Blackwell Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 If you had come back and replied after checking the log as I earlier suggested, I would have saved you the $45. I would also have given you correct advice for solving the issue. As I said previously, do not continue to use a recovered file. Steven
Oldsneekers Posted October 7, 2006 Author Posted October 7, 2006 Why not use the recovered file. FM web site states that when coverting to use recover file before the conversion. Please educate me as my tea cup is only partialy filled. I did check the log but all it said the file was damaged. Thanks are still in order (sometime impatience is worth the price).
Steven H. Blackwell Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 The purpose of Recovery is to get the file in sufficiently good order to extract the data and put it into a clean clone of the file. Recovery will sacrifice any structural item in the file to preserve data. The FileMaker Server Engineers once again made it very clear at the DEVCON not to continue to use recovered files. http://www.fmcollective.com/2006/08/a_few_tidbits_f.html Steven
Oldsneekers Posted October 10, 2006 Author Posted October 10, 2006 Ok, I stand humbled before you. I just don't understand why the preconverstion instructions from Filemaker would suggest recovery in FM5 before conversion to FM8. Thanks again. GW
Steven H. Blackwell Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 Ok, I stand humbled before you. I just don't understand why the preconverstion instructions from Filemaker would suggest recovery in FM5 before conversion to FM8. Oh my, no need for that. I haven't seen those instructions. I would have to say, if they are as you report them, that they are just not correct. Please tell me where they are, and I will look into this. Steven
Newbies Pietje Posted October 17, 2006 Newbies Posted October 17, 2006 Check this: Open the file outside the server Go to Filemaker Pro>Sharing>Filemaker pro network... Did you check in the network access to file part "All Users" for that file? If not do so, open de db's in the server and try again. HTH Mr T.
