I'm extremly new at filemaker I know pretty much nothing. I'm not asking anyone to do my work for me but I can't seem to find a starting point or a good enough resource to make this not consume all my time.

My Vision:

I'd like to be able to have the user login select what the documents type/title is, click a browse button select the file, hit ok. And click another button that imports the file renames it according to the records serial/document type selected and then mv's it to a folder automatically created from the serial/record name and organizes it based on the document/type selected, and lists it under the document type in the record that you can expand and view the files beneath that type of document and when you click them it opens them up in file maker for viewing.

And thats pretty much it, I just want some ideas about how this should be done, perhaps theres a document I should read? Is this all going to be scripted? [color:red]

Wow! The reason I think nobody has answered your post is because it's not that easy to do what you want. You are going to need the Troi File plug-in to manipulate the system software < http://www.troi.com/ >. I'm also going to recommend some resources for you to get aquainted with the basics of FileMaker.
