Anyone with experience working with text characters in the private Hex range (2000+) -- Unicode or other -- able to tell me how to get them to appear in a field or in the layout? Thanks.

Private Use actually starts at U+E000. On your Mac you can use the Character Palette to input these into a field.

From your system preference panel, open "International" and select the Input Menu tab. From there, you can choose Character Palette as an input menu choice, so you can pop it up whenever you need it. You just double-click a character to input it.
