Server 8 - read only database

Featured Replies

Hello,

I recently installed Filemaker Server 8. I have extended privleges set as well as file ownerships set to read/write. Yet when I connect to the server, the hosted database is read remotely as read only. The server has the databse listed as "normal" and I am logging in remotely with a full access account. If I stop the server, the database is no longer read only.

Any advice?

Welcome,

This is a common problem for those working with Server 7 or 8 on OS X. FileMaker Server requires Read & Write permission to the files it hosts.

What you'll need to do is stop the Server hosting of the problem file(s), select the files in the Finder, and go to File->Get Info. In there, change the file permissions for the Group to 'fmsadmin' with 'Read & Write' permission.

Hi again,

Yes, that one was one of the first things I did. The ownerships and permissions are correctly set. Any other suggestions?

I have filemaker pro advanced installed on the same computer that hosts the server. Could this be a problem?

You wouldn't want to use FMP or FMP Advanced on that machine to open files that are being hosted by the Server app.

Are the hosted files located in the Data folder, or somewhere else? Double check the permissions of the folder(s) where the hosted files reside.

Ok, changed folder to correct ownership and permissions - thanks.

Status went to "closed." unable to open.

Also, I tried to put other databases on the server and they work fine. Why is this happening to just one database?

Don't know. You might check the Event.log file and see if there's an explanation.

event log states corrupted file.

I did recovery but recovered file is missing some formating but works on server. instead of read-only, I have full access.

So basically, some of the formating caused it not to work on the server?

I need that formatting back. any adivce?

it seems none of the graphics like buttons made it through the recovery..and it's not letting me copy and paste from a previous version

Do not try to use the recovered file. It's likely to still have problems in it. Instead, import the data into a clone of a known-good backup and add any changes since it was created.

all of the back up files I have for my database read as "corrupt" in the server event log so it looks like they are no "clean" copies.

Since the recovery file seems to be working, just without the buttons, shouldn't I use it?

just read this on another post:

No luck so I shelled out the 45 bucks to talk to the guys at FM tech support. They suggested to "save a copy as" a compacted copy then recover it. I put it back into the FM server and held my breath then ... it worked.

still lost my buttons

Just tried to use the compacted (not recovered) file and it worked!

good luck everyone

Sorry I didn't get here today in time to deal with this. I am thinking I may have to psot a FAQ of these items.
