I need a nuts & bolts resource of how FM Server works

I am new to Filemaker Server and am trying to get up to speed on how to program to make the most efficient use of it. I keep running across tid-bits of information such as:

[color:blue]"FileMaker Server can reindex a field that has been edited by a guest, rather than sending the data to the guest for reindexing."

but have so far been unable to find a comprehensive description of these types of nuts & bolts things that Server does. I am especially wondering where calculations are performed, summaries are summarized and other issue that effect performance. Is there such a holy grail out there ? I
