When trying to launch a particular database on 8 server. I open the database and it goes into "checking" then immediatly back to "closed". Now if I go into the file permissions and change them to read only it opens without problem. This would be fine except the database isnt modifiable of course.

Im hoping someone has ran into this problem before and can provide some insight?

The file may have failed its consistency check. With the Server off, open the file in FileMaker Pro and save a copy as compressed. Then use that copy. See Tech Info 5594.
