Prevent addition of records in portal

I have allowed the creation of new records via a relationship, so users can simply type into a portal to create new related records. However, I want this in only some layouts; in others, I want the same users NOT to be able to do this.

Is it possible to set this selectively, according to which layout a user is on?

You can have portals that don't allow creation of related records by turning off the option in the relationship definition. If you need some layouts to have the option and others not to (for the same table), use a second table occurrence with the option turned off in one and on in the other.
