Newbies agility Posted March 19, 2007 Newbies Posted March 19, 2007 The FileMaker Knowledge Base says this: In order to delete a record represented by a portal row (a related record), check the 'Allow deletion of portal records' check box in the Portal Setup dialog window. Select the row by clicking it and choose Delete Record from the Mode menu. The dialog will read, 'Permanently delete this one related record?' Clicking Delete will delete only that related record. I have allowed deletion of portal records, and when I select a row and hit Delete it says "Permanently delete this one related record?" and when I click Delete, it deletes the entire record, not the portal record. I have another database that has a portal in it and the deletion of portal records works fine. I even tried to copy and paste that portal into the problem database and it still deletes the whole record. How can I fix this? Thank you. --Sue
Raybaudi Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Hi double check the relationship, expecially the box saying: Delete related records in this table when...
John Mark Osborne Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 There are three possible dialog you can get when choosing Delete Record from the Records menu. The message you get depends on what you have selected. 1) If no related fields within a portal have the cursor blinking in them and no portal rows are highlighted (simulate by typing the Enter key on the keypad), the message will display "Permanently delete this ENTIRE record?" with the buttons choices "Delete" and "Cancel" because FileMaker is going to delete the parent record. The cursor can be blinking in a field from the same table occurrence as the layout. 2) If your cursor is blinking in a field within a portal, the message will display, "Do you want to delete the entire master record or just this one related record?" with the buttons choices "Master", "Related" and "Cancel". 3) If the portal row is highlighted (simulate this by clicking on a portal row where there are no fields or buttons), this message will appear, "Permanently delete this one related record?" with the buttons choices "Delete" and "Cancel".
Newbies agility Posted March 19, 2007 Author Newbies Posted March 19, 2007 You mentioned relationships - I had the portal file's box about allowing deletions CHECKED, and I looked in the files that work correctly and it was UNCHECKED. Seems backwards but I unchecked the box and it works correctly now. Thank you!!! --Sue
