HP 4MV prints light gray instead of black

Why do records in Filemaker 8 (and 7 and 6) print in light gray instead of black when using HP 4MV from a Mac (OS X 10.4.6)? I've tried switching from Times New Roman to New York and then to Arial, but no difference.

I'm trying to print a 1-page letter. The letter prints out okay in normal black on the 4MV when using other programs, such as MS Word. But in Filemaker it prints out light gray.

What's also strange is that at times I've been able to print records in black using my 4MV. But at other times (like right now!), it only prints light gray. I tried restarting my Mac to see if it made a difference, but it didn't.

Firstly check that the text in FMP is formatted for black and not a dark grey.

Secondly, check your printer settings to see whether a toner-saving option has been activated.
