I did search the forums for an answer to this, but I didn't see anything that related specifically to my situation, so I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I work with a non-profit membership association. We use Filemaker to maintain all of their records regarding membership, meeting attendance, etc. Each record in the database represents a person. There are about 10,000 records, some are current members, some are past members, and some are just non-member contacts. Each person (record) in the database has a unique ID number that is an auto-enter serial number generated upon creation of a record.

Now - the assosication has an upcoming meeting that will be about 700 people. The data entry fields for this meeting are set up in the database, indicating what courses, special events, etc. each person is registering for. Some of the registrants will already be in the database, so we can just add information into their existing records; some registrants will be brand new records to add into the database. We need to be able to generate a unique invoice number, beginning with 1000, for each person who registers for the meeting. The invoice numbers have to be sequential for only the registrants of the meeting.

Is there a way to create a script that generates a consecutive number in a particular field only for the records in which you run that script? Or something to that effect? Help, please!

Find the records, then use the Replace command to enter the serial number, specifying that it start at 1000 and increment by 1.
