I have a problem that I simply ran out of time on last year. It's a solution for the coaches on my daughter's swim team. I think I've got the basic structure completed but I'm having a difficult time understanding how to get the reports I need.

I'm not sure about the approach. Should I use a script, a calculation, a sub-summary etc.:? What I have is a record for each swimmer. I have related records for each stroke they may swim and some variables about the stroke. I also have a series of records for their scheduled meets. For each meet, the coaches spend a considerable amount of time seeding relays. In other words, they spend a lot of time trying to find the fastest combination of swimmers in a given event - age group - boys or girls. It's easier when the relay is all the same stroke, but they have several events when the relay will be one leg of one stroke, freestyle, and one leg will be back stroke, butterfly, breast-stroke etc.... Some times the relay will be a combination of only two strokes freestyle and backstroke, or freestyle and butterfly etc.... In any case, the same swimmer can't swim all four legs. If the relay were the same same stroke (say all legs were freestyle) I could just build a relationship that sorted the swimmers by time and just display them in portals where the first four rows are the fastest relay team. Rows 5 - 8 would be the second fastes relay team and so on. But when they are mixed like this, it really becomes a challenge for me.

At the risk of over-complicating this, let me try and give you an example. Larry, Moe, Curly and Albert, are the four fastest 9-10 year old boys on the team in the freestyle. They make up the freestyle relay team. But in the 9-10 boys medley relay team (each boy swims one leg in a different stroke) things change. Larry is faster than moe at freestyle but only by a half a second. Larry is also faster than Moe at butterfly, but by three full seconds. So in the medly relay, Larry swims the butterfly leg, while Moe swims freestyle. Curly doesn't swim in the medley relay because of all of the remaining 9-10 year old boys there is someone faster than him at both of the remaining strokes. Albert swims the breastroke leg, while Louis swims the backstroke.

I don't mean to be presumptuous by attaching the file to this post. Just trying to be efficient. If you can help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it. I feel like I've gotten myself in over my head, but what usually happens is someone points me in the right direction or gives me a push and then it all clicks. If you can help great. If not, I wouldn't sweat it. This is a already a year old so no one is missing it.

Thanx,

Papa
