Can I use the migration assistant to transfer all my files on to a new iMac without the trouble of manual transfers? I have FM Server 8 and Advanced 8.5 I need to move plus the setup for a couple 8 meg files and their backups.

I don't think so. I believe the purpose of that Tool is to update the Schedules settings when going from Server 7 to Server 8. Did you try it?

Steven

If you mean the Migration Assistant.app of OS X, then yes, it can move your files. Personally I think I'd prefer to reinstall applications like FileMaker Server, using its installer. But I imagine Migration Assistant.app could do it. It seems to move everything else.

If you let it move all your stuff, it will also move all your Preferences files, which is a mixed blessing. In my case I went from a PowerPC machine to an Intel machine, and there were a lot of obsolete preference files. Not too difficult to remove.

I think Steven is thinking of the Restore Settings.app on the FileMaker Server install disk. I wonder if you can use Backup Settings on one machine and Restore Settings on another? That would be convenient. I don't know.

Correct. That's what I was describing. And no, it doesn't transfer across machines. Or at least it's not supposed to do so.

Use the FMS installer rather than some other device.
