I want to write a script to search for a "#" mark in a text field and replace it with a carriage return, then find the next hache mark and replace it and so on through a series of records.

In FM Pro 8 HELP it says

In the Find what box, type the data you want to search for. In the Replace with box, type the replacement data.

Tip To find or replace invisible characters, such as tabs or carriage returns, manually copy and paste these characters from a field into the Find what or Replace with box.

However I cannot work out how to copy an invisible character. Where do I find it? What do I enter in the REPLACE WITH TEXT box?

Substitute ( yourTextField ; "#" ; ¶ )
