Sorting Category 1 through 10 in order

I'm trying to figure out how to set up my scripts (or other solution) so that when users sort the records by user inputable field "category number" which is a number that falls between 1 and 10 the number 10 category shows up in order (after number 9). To get around this I've been having the user put in 01, 02, etc for the category so that when sorted category 10 will fall after 09.

Anyone know how to get around having to put in the leading "0" and still have category 10 show up after category 9 when doing a sort?

Store it in a number field, not a text field.
