Help needed adjusting field data to fit field size

I need a way to have my data adjust to fit within a defined field size. I want it to be the biggest possible size for the field but when it's longer, it needs to be smaller. I am creating a dynamic vocabulary database for my school and I want to be able to print vocab. lists and then go to half-sheet word wall cards and to 8-to-a-page flash cards etc. Some words are short like "sum" and others are "scientific method" and I don't want "sum" to be a small font in the middle of a huge card but if I make it that big, then "scientific method" wraps off the card. I can individually adjust the font size in the record itself but then that travels with it as data and you have a list of 12 point words with a blank in between because the words I resized hold the literal size and won't adjust. Ihope this makes sense. Thanks. I am using 9 but will be serving it with 8 so I cannot use any special features that won't work on both. THanks
