I've got FM Server on a dedicated machine but anytime I ever have to open a file locally in FMP I have to transfer over the network and back. It's kind of a pain with large files.

Would it cause any problems if I were to install FMP on the server along with FMS?

Nope, no problem doing such. Just be sure that your files are closed in server before opening in FMP, and vice-versa.

As an added precaution I would sure that [color:red]all files hosted by server are closed before opening any files in the Pro client.

Maybe as a precaution to keep from making mistakes. But there's no technical reason you can't have some files open in FileMaker Server and others open in FileMaker Pro.

Until a file opened in Pro seeks a related file still open in Server. Then what happens?

That's certainly a good point. I just meant that if the other files running on the server aren't to be edited, there's no technical reason to take them down.
