check box to add member

Hi there, I'm completely new to Filemaker so please bear with me.

I have a database (roughly based on the email campaign manager template) in fp9, with related tables. In contacts I add my contact details and in groups I can enter all the groups that individuals can be members of.

In Groups I can then add members of each group which is great but I would like to be able to add the members to a group from the contact layout not the groups layout.

I added a checkbox set on the contacts layout which takes the group names from a value list, all the names appear and I can select them but my problem is that this assigns new groups for each member rather than assigning the members to the named group.

Ive been pulling my hair out over this and tried lots of different methods but I always seem to be assigning groups to contacts rather than contacts to groups. Please help me before I go bald!!1
