Migrating from Server 7 on Mac to Server 9 Win - can't get LDAP auth working

I've followed all the admin guide steps, and plugged in the information about our Mac OD server appropriately/as close to matching the config on our working Server 7 on Mac install... But I can't get Mac FMP7 or FMP9 clients to authenticate against the windows-hosted version of our FMP server to save my life.

Is it possible to use Mac/OD as the auth source for external accounts when using a Windows Filemaker Server 9 install? Or do I have to dig into the depths of AD (which we don't use at all)/some other Windows-ism to get things working?

We're just trying to "simplify" our backend by moving all compatible apps into a VMware environment (which of course is not possible with OS X Server right now)... But mainly, I need to know if I'm missing some tiny piece of info and can easily get this converted over to Windows/VM, or if we should be thinking hardware refresh of our old 1st-gen Xserve running Filemaker Server.

If there is a (better than the FMP admin manual) tutorial/howto for Mac client/OD/Windows server, that would be ideal.

Thanks in advance!
