EVENT: [big][color:red]The Separation Model - Matt Navarre[/big]

This month's meeting topic is Mechanics of the Separation Model, presented by Matt Navarre

FileMaker 7-8-9 allows us to combine multiple tables into one database file, but it also allows one database file to reference tables in another file. The separation model involves this separation of data from interface, which provides some great benefits. For example, by deploying a new interface file on the existing data, you can effect an upgrade of a hosted solution in mere minutes.

This presentation is based on my upcoming DevCon session, and will cover the mechanics of separation. I'll demonstrate the process in detail, and discuss the tricky aspects such as: value lists, relationships that must remain in the Data file, calculated fields, and security considerations. We'll also discuss when using this method is worth it, and when it's not.

There are several ways you can employ these techniques - it doesn't just involve two files. We'll go over some of the more successful models in use by developers.
