Looking for people who have experience with either of the above plugins. Any feedback you can give with respect to ease of use, technical issues, etc.?

I would like to make an informed choice before advising on what to buy.

I've been using SMTPit for about 2 years. I've found it to be easy to use once you have the basics down. Their support is adequate, their samples files are good and help you get off the ground. IMHO it's head and shoulders above Send Mail.
