server 8, client 8: if left for even 10 minutes without activity then related, server files close for the client. In user setup the "close file on inactivity" is OFF - any ideas on this? It happens on a variety of machines, all Windows, but never on my Mac, which is not on the clients local network but at my office.

On each desktop, check the energy saving settings. The machine could be putting the cpu or hard disk to sleep, or doing something else to try to save power.
