Which MS Server 2008 flavor should I use with FM Server?

Featured Replies

(I couldn't find an answer to my question after perusing the threads in this forum so I apologize if this question has been answered already and I missed it.)

Howdy, all:

I'm biting the bullet and have purchased FM 9.0x Server and FM Web School's FM Studio, and am now gathering opinions as to which Microsoft Server 2008 flavor should I purchase to use with them: Standard or Web?

As an FM Pro developer, I want to be best able to assist my customers when installing and using my solution, so I'm leaning a little bit toward the Standard Edition. However, since the solution will be accessed via the Web in many cases then maybe the Web version will do? *puzzled look*

There's a BIG price difference between the two Server flavors, but of course I don't want to shoot myself in the foot by purchasing the Web version (which is the less expensive of the two) then find out that it wasn't the best choice for the job.

TIA for your opinions and help!

Rich

None. FM Server is not certified for any flavor of Windows 2008.

According to the tech specs published on the FMI web site today:

--

These are the system requirements for both FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced.

Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2

Windows Server 2000 SP4

Windows XP Professional SP2

While it's possible that FM Server will install and run on Windows 2008, it's not a supported configuration and you'll be on your own.

I guess I just nominated myself as an unofficial FM-on-Server 2008 guinea pig. Oh well, why not: you only live once...twice, if you're James Bond.

If you were to use Server 2003 OS, you would use the Standard Edition [color:red] and only that edition.

No version of FileMaker Server is certified to run on MS Server 2008. This could always change in the future, but for now, that is the story.
