I have a jobs database with a portal of a line items database. Each line will have a code ID, description, price and quantity field, that's not problem. What I would also like to have is a bill of materials for each line item that I can put toegther when creating each line item.

It seems like this may be able to be done by using a portal of materials inside the line items portal, but it doesn't seem to work.

Is this the right approach? Can a portal be placed inside another

portal?

FileMaker does not allow portals within portals. You could, however, have your line items link to yet another related file, via a "Go to Related Records" script step. You can have this file come up in a small window, in such a way that it appears to be a pop-up window, by clicking a button in your line items portal row.

There are probably other ways to tackle this, too. Feel free to ask more questions as you progress.
