Can you have a Running Total in a Portal?

I'd like to have a Running Total in a Portal. Each record in the portal has user-entered values, and the Balance caluculates OK. But I need a running balance in the portal, like a bank book. Should be a simple thing, but can't get it to work. "Use value from previous record" won't work I don't think. Any suggestions?? Thanks.
