Using XML for upgrading runtimes?

Does anyone have any experience of upgrading runtime version by first exporting the data (previous version) to XML and then importing the xml files into the newer version?

Granted this does not work for container fields, but it seems that it might be a somewhat cleaner method than trying to use filemaker's import script step..

I've just finished an update system, which downloads zipped updated files from our FTP server, and automatically performs and export and import on the data file.

Our data file doesn't contain any containers so it wasn't an issue for us.
