Join us, and help to SMACKDOWN three FileMaker solutions:

1. SmallCo alum Curtis Michelson returns from The Land of Open Source with The Synchorator, a developer utility for syncing SQL and FileMaker data.

2. John Weinshel shares his pain with a particularly tough redesign of a "ransom note" FileMaker layout.

3. Albert, Scott, Dave and Jose ask you to throw darts at their work for The University of North Carolina Press. Did we get TOO big for our britches? Why is this list scrolling so SLOWWWLYYYY?

And, we have a Design Challenge for Caucus Members:

4. Help us design the online submission and voting app for future SMACKDOWNS: This app will let Caucus members submit their solutions for review so that we can vote on them. We'll share a Goal Spec and a simple mockup done by Design Caucus member Ibrahim Bittar. We'll review the finalists in the next SMACKDOWN.

What is the Design SMACKDOWN?

The FileMaker Design Caucus has been a wonderfully polite and buttoned-down gathering of design literati since October 2006. But judging by the rowdy yet invigorating workshop Albert led at the San Francisco DevCon, folks appreciate honest and direct design criticism, and want more of it. The Design SMACKDOWN is a place for frank feedback, with the chance for the audience to either chime in or "throw tomatoes."

How does the Design SMACKDOWN work?

Presenters have one minute to explain the goals and roles of their existing application. The question to answer is "Who uses this tool, and what do they want to accomplish?" We're not interested in the FileMaker equivalent of "Stupid Pet Tricks", and we also don't want to be subjected to home movies of your own FileMaker development! It's about your clients and their goals. [For a copy of SmallCo's Goals by Role template, email [email protected].]

After the one minute intro, we begin critiquing the solution, through live audio and screensharing, live chat and interactive voting modules, including the soon-to-be-world-renowned "Throw Tomatoes" button! [No actual tomatoes will be harmed in this production.] Each critique lasts for 20 minutes, including the intro. Three critiques are scheduled for each Design SMACKDOWN.
