I am using FMPro 11.02 and I have files on a server that I would like my clients to open from an icon on their desktop. How can I do that? I know this is a simple question but I am new to FMPro.

many people create an "opener" file which is just a tiny .fp7 file that has a single script which has one step, that step being to open your database from the server.

Set this opener file to run the Open script when the file launches and then close itself.

No need for an opener file any more (that is sooo last decade). :

From the File menu choose Send Link, this creates a shortcut to the hosted file. You'll need to make one on a Mac for the Mac users and one on a PC for the PC users since they are OS specific.

We run a very small business and we decided to put all our office files on a server so everyone could have access instead of going from computer to computer. We can open a file with the method you described, but:

What happens if the IP changes, we are on a dynamic scheme (I think that is the correct term, our IP changes every now and then).

We also tried to enter the name of the server instead of the IP and cannot connect using the server name, can that be done, and if so any idea as to why the IP will connect but not the server name.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

I hope by "server" you mean FileMaker Server and not a shared network volume... set the server up to have a fixed IP address. If this is inside your internal LAN then it should be reasonably simple.
