Sending emails via SMTP

Hi Guys,

We've got FileMaker Server advanced 11 and FileMaker Pro 11 clients. Im testing out sending emails via smtp, am I right in thinking that smtp emails dont go via FM server, they connect directly to Exhange in our case and email out?

If thats the case, is there any way I can send them to our FileMaker Server 11 and then get FM Server to send the email out? The reason I ask is our IT technician whose microsoft chap thinks its going to be a security problem enabling exchange to accept emails from programs on our network - he doesnt trust other programs not sending emails out, he has a connector for the FileMaker Server and would prefer FileMaker Server to send out the emails to exchange.
