This is the method I have recently adopted to allow the user to sort ascending/descending/by value list, and know which field is sorted, and which direction it is sorted.

The nice part about this setup is that different windows of the same layout will each have their own sort status icon, and the icon will disappear when records in the window are no longer sorted.
