This field cannot be modified until "NumberID" is given a valid value

Hey there. I'm stuck, hopefully someone can help me out.

Three Tables are involved: Parent, 1 and 2. From data in Table 2, there's three sequential Fields with Value Lists that work perfectly in Table 1.

I've created a NumberID Field in Parent Table (Auto-enter serial, Indexing All) and in Table 1 (Indexing All) then joined them via Relationship, checked the boxes that allow creation and deletion of records in Table 1.

A Layout in the Parent Table has a Portal with the three Fields from Table 1, with the goal to create records in Table 1.

This should work, and I can see the available options in the first pop-up Value List within the Portal, but when I select the desired value, the dreaded dialog pops up: "This field cannot be modified until "NumberID" is given a valid value".

In fact, using the same Parent Table and two other Tables, a couple of years ago I implemented a similar system and it works perfectly (with a lot of help here in FMForums, thank you!). All I'm trying to do is replicate the same elements (all field names are different, of course); I've been poring over the details and everything seems to be in the right place, except the Relationship between Parent Table and Table 1, which is not being acknowledged at all.

So I'm baffled and once again throw myself at the mercy of the masters!

Could be important, I'm using Filemaker Pro 8.5 Advanced.

Post a cut-down version of your file with the relationship.

Vaughn, would you believe you nudged me towards the solution already? You see, I'd forgotten that a NumberID is automatically assigned only when a new record is created, NOT while playing with the portal of an existing record. As the file in question is a 52 MB monster with over 600 records (in Spanish to boot), while cutting it down to an acceptable size for this forum, I erased all records and created a new one as an experiment, and there it was, the portal is operational!

Thank you for getting me to think outside of the box!

Good to hear you found the solution yourself. :D
