We are continuing to hear reports of confusion and misunderstanding about the new Remote Container functionality, especially in conjunction with FileMaker® Server 12.

Some of these reports are focused on efforts to manage the location of the containers containing the binary objects in relation to the FileMaker® Pro 12 files.

When files with remote container data are hosted on FileMaker Server, the container data will always be in a subfolder of the FileMaker file's location. This is different than what you can do with non-hosted files, where you can choose where the container data will be saved, including network shares.

So be aware of the major difference in behavior of the hosted versus non-hosted FileMaker files when you design your solution.

The remote container feature does bring significant benefits when hosted but those benefits are in the domain of reduced backup times and reduced backup storage space, not so much in the realm of pure document management.

In the Narratives we prepared and that we released on April 4th, we discuss the management of remote containers. Here is the link to all the Narratives:

We thank the over 5,000 of you in the FileMaker community who have come to the site to read and download these narratives.
