Newbies Wain Allen, MD Posted January 8, 2001 Newbies Posted January 8, 2001 I am my own self-taught network builder and administrator. I have 8 copies of FM on Ethernet via Appletalk and have FileMaker Pro Server 3.0. I would like to add a Windows machine via TCP to the same network. It appears I need to give and address to the server, but I cannot find a lot of information. Can I make up a number?? Can I steal one from my IP since my local network is not online? Is ther more to the connection than this? Thanks for the help.
BobWeaver Posted January 8, 2001 Posted January 8, 2001 You can create your own IP addresses as follows: Suggestion: Use non-routable IP addresses. Just in case you ever get connected to the internet, these addresses will just bounce off a router without going anywhere past your local network. Some non-routable addresses that you can use are any that begin 192.168... Eg, 192.168.1.1, through 192.168.1.254 Rule: You have to correctly set the subnet mask. For the address ranges above, the correct subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. If this is set incorrectly, the machines will not communicate.
