Kay Posted October 5, 2000 Posted October 5, 2000 After a few years away from development, I'm doing pretty good with FMP (and really, really love fmforums!) but I wish I'd saved my textbooks on database design. I have FileMaker Pro-specific books. Would y'all kindly recommend your current favourite database design book(s), not FMP specific? Much appreciation. And keep up the good work! What a great community. Regards, Kay.

What a great community. Regards, Kay. A good beginners book that helped me out quite a bit is "Relational Database Design Clearly Explained" by Jan L. Harrington. She goes into a lot of detail about the theory, most of which is applicable to FileMaker. Another of a similar vein is "Relational Database Design for Mere Mortals", but I can't find it right now, and don't remember the author. I'm not even sure that the title is exactly right, but it does end in "mere mortals." Chuck
Newbies zackfc Posted October 9, 2000 Newbies Posted October 9, 2000 I've used the Mere Mortals book. It's a little MS Access example-centric, but an extremely friendly intro to relational database design. There is a lot of info about managing the process as well. This may or may not be interesting depending on your experience, but i found it quite helpful. (All the concepts are presented in a universally applicable form.) Here's an Amazon link: Database Design for Mere Mortals : A Hands-On Guide to Relational Database Design by Michael J. Hernandez -z
Kay Posted October 18, 2000 Author Posted October 18, 2000 Thanks muchly!! I've ordered a copy of Mere Mortals. And might also tackle Jan's book afterward. My brain needs lots of input to output. Thanks, Kay. PS Does anyone else have a fave book?
idiotmachine Posted October 31, 2000 Posted October 31, 2000 Try this one... Special Edition Using Filemaker Pro 5 by Rich Coulombre, Jonathan Price (my new personal fav).
