Which has better performance in a DB or 600 or so records that need to display an jpeg:

to copy the image into a container field or to reference it?

What do you mean "reference it"?

Could you say more about what you want to do with it?

If you just want it on the layout, your best bet is to cut and paste it onto the layout (in layout mode). Make sure the image is optimised for screen first.
