no file open on host I want to open them remotely

Hi. I don't want to have all the files open on the host all the time because it takes a lot of resources. On the other hand I don't want to call the office and ask them to open x or z file every time ( espeacially if there's no one there ). So I wan't to be able to open them on the host remotely so I can open the file on my local machine. If anyone has any ideas on this I would greatly appreaciate it. Thanks
