I have a field that has a transparent background on it with a type entry.

The type entry is used to make a choice. Once that choice is made I would like to hide the type and just show the container field that is underneath.

Actually you should reverse the stacking order and put the calculated field on top. In the Field Format Behavior for the calculated field, uncheck "Allow entry into field". This way the calculated field will be displayed and when a user clicks the field the bottom field and contents are displayed.
