FileMaker 13 and Apache

With FileMaker 13’s update comes an unexpected twist for some with regard to web publishing and Apache. For most installations this will be quite straight forward, deploying the web publishing engine and connecting from a remote location. With the Web publishing and web site on separate machines this would be recommended, however saying you are... View the full article

Old ways vs New ways

As developers one of the hardest things for us year on year is pushing the limits of what we write and can feasibly do as developers. This leads us to get stuck in habits, whether that is code related in terms of syntax, structure related or interface. We like to do the same things repetitively... View the full article

Standards! Standards! Read All About It!

With FileMaker being such a versatile and quick development application it is often too easy to develop a functional solution with little regard for its legacy and, in particular, how the solution is to be supported, maintained and developed in the future. As developers, either commissioned or “in house” our support of a system may... View the full article

Game Changers

The phrase game changer is one of those phrases that can potentially be good or bad depending on the connotation given to it. To this effect I want to talk about both. The good I want to talk about are things that we take for granted like large steps up in the industry, or potentially amazing feats... View the full article

WebDirect: Early Days for the IWP replacement …

The introduction of WebDirect at the expense of Instant Web Publishing has added a much enhanced toolset to the developers armoury. There are considerable improvements in function that can avoid the clunky, compromising and design limited results of an IWP solution. WebDirect offers the following specific feature improvements that are now supported where they were... Source

My Time As An Apprentice

As some people may or may not have known, I am Linear Blue’s other apprentice alongside Jacob Unsworth. I am the Web Development Apprentice whereas he is the FileMaker Developer Apprentice. Although we work closely together, even our desks are across from each other, we both have completely different skillsets and work in completely different... Source

Everything on the Go

Over the last decade we’ve seen a huge amount of change in the way we use IT. This is everything from what we’re using mobile phones for to the games we play and everything in between. I did a presentation for a company a little over a year and a half ago which talked about... Source

The downfall of Flash

I’m not talking about the superhero here; I’m talking about the video and animation creator and player that millions of people came to love and use on a daily basis. In its hay-day, flash was pretty much a system requirement for accessing the web. Many of the largest websites around would use Flash to relay... Source

Are we there yet?

I decided to take a break from my story having started at Linear Blue around 6 months ago, as everything is settling down and becoming easier for me. Instead I’d like to talk about where we might be going in the future in terms of the technology we use day to day. As with all... Source

FileMaker – Instant Web Publishing [IWP] … R.I.P.

I’m sure we can think of some examples of where the deployment of Instant Web Publishing [iWP] for a solution has been successful and served to meet purpose for the end user. There are many examples, however, where IWP has been considered but the limitations proved too much of a stretch to be incorporated into... Source
