  1. OK, so this means going through all the relationships, scripts and calculations and redefining them to match the new names...doesn't it. Any tips, pointers, short cuts, insights, prayers? I'm really not looking forward to this.... --DB
  2. OK, Part I: Can one file have different relationships with different files of the same name but in different locations? For example, can "file1.fp5" on "Server #1" have a relationship with "file1.fp5" on "Server #2?" --or a remote server with a static IP address? Part II: Can "file1.fp5" do imports from and execute external scripts in the remote "file1.fp5?" Part III: Can "file1.fp5" perform the above-mentioned tasks in relation to a number of "file1.fp5's" in various static remote locations? Gracias in advance, DB
  3. Thanks, I thought that would probably work but didn't want to leave it up to chance. --DB
  4. Hey Vaughan, thanks. Your response makes me question how well I expressed myself. Here's my conundrum. I'd like to have a field that displays a status function, eg. Status(CurrentFoundCount) on a multi-user setup. So, how do I define the field? Can I use: f1 = Status(CurrentFoundCount) or must I use g1 = Global, number (--then set g1 to 1 while in browse mode) f1 = g1 * Status(CurrentFoundCount) to make sure f1 displays a different value for each user and not the Status(CurrentFoundCount) on the server? See what I mean? --DB
  5. "You should never assume things will work as you expect in FileMaker." --True. To play it safe I'm going to set up a global field with a value of 1 and approach it in the spirit of "global * Status(CurrentFoundCount)" I'd just rather not do that if it's not neccessary. SB is a folk singer/songwriter and Saskatoonian, if that's the word. --DB
  6. Never mind. I've got it figured out. Thanks, --DB
  7. So in other words, if I keep the indexing/storage off, it should be okay.... I don't see why something like "Status(CurrentFoundCount)" wouldn't be flexible enough to produce a different result for each user on a network. I'm just looking at a deadline and I don't have a way to test it in my home office. BTW, I see your from Saskatoon. You wouldn't know a singer by the name of Susan Bond, would you? Just wondering, DB
  8. OK, in a multi-user setup, a calculation field based on a status function will act like a global field and produce a different value for each user on the network. Correct? -DB
  9. Gracias Se
  10. Thanks, I'll have them try Timbuktu. Out of curiosity, have you an idea of relative operating speeds? Citrix vs. Timbuktu vs. straight FileMaker over a T1?
  11. Great, thank you for the response. May I ask some clarifying points on the options? 1) "User Browser" Do you mean using the DB as it would be published on the web? 2) I'm not sure I understand. If you mean that someone could use Timbuktu / PC Anywhere cross-country to a machine that is local to the server how could the data-transfer rate be better than accessing the server directly through the T1? Since Option 3 is out of the budget, it seems to me that the only real option is to go through the synchronization circus. Oy, I was really hoping to avoid that....
  12. Hey everybody, I've got a relational database of about 12 files installed on a network and everybody loves it. Only problem is, now they want to use it over a T1 connection with partial bandwidth to remote offices but it takes forever to work. Is FileMaker not designed for this kind of networking? Is this happening because of the relational nature of the DB? Is there an obvious fix to this problem? Thanks a bunch, Dave
  13. Oops, sorry, I meant to post this in a different forum.... --DB
  14. Hey everybody, I've got a relational database of about 12 files installed on a network and everybody there loves it. Only problem is, now they want to use it over a T1 connection with partial bandwidth to remote offices and it...takes...for...ever...for...it...to...work. Is FileMaker not designed for this kind of networking? Does this happen because of the multiple files? Is there an obvious way to fix this? Thanks a bunch, Dave
