I have a data base which contains names and a number for each name. How do I total a names numbers? in otherwords if I have a feild name which contains "Dan" and a number feild with a 15 and another feild "stan" and a number feild with a 10. then a thrid feild with "Dan" again but this time a 5 I want to add a feild which will disply a 20 in both of Dan's records and a 10 in stans record. I sure this is simple but I can't seem to make it work. I need to have all the data in this data base desplyed at once, I need to see all the records together

For those of you you are regulars to this forum this is my thrid post on the topic.I am sorry about that but I am still trying to import a student roster into a filemaker data base. The file is an Ascii file with each piece of data seperated by a comma I am running a windows computer and I would like to be able to take one piece of information out of this file and place it in my data base. Is this possible? When I try to convert the file to a filemaker pro database only the first feild of the file is copyed. Do I need to set filemaker to import a comma seperated files? what sorts of things need to be done to my data base to prepare it for the file. Please help!

Im sure this is very easy to do but, how do I create a total feild which will total one feild from each of multiple records? I have a database of students and they all have weekly points, for diffretn weeks. I want to total a students points from a set of weeks. I know how to do search to disply the right student records but how do I total all a students point?

I am sorry about the vaugeness of my post. I am using filemaker 5 on a win 98 computer. I want to remove the names from a sky word file. I can easly open this file in word or note pad. It contains a lot of information and each feild of information is seperated by a comma. is there a way that I can write a script which will go to this file, and say give me the text after the 7th comma and store it into a feild. What I am trying to do is take a list of students from this sky word file and place each students name in a seperate record. So that when I am finished I can have an update button on my data base linked to a script which can go to this file and take every students name and place each in a diffrent record in a name feild. basicly, is there a way filemaker can search a text document and copy sections of it into feilds?

I am creating a database that uses as roster not in File maker format. This file contains a great deal of information. Is there anyway that I can make filemaker go to this file and copy only the names out of it and place these names in a data base?
