Determining number of particular occurrence in a single field

Sorry if this has been asked earlier, but I've searched extensively and have been unable to find the answer to my dilemma. 

 

Say I have a particular field called "car type", and each record will contain either Ford, Honda, Mercedes etc; how do I create a summary field that will contain the total number of Ford's, Honda's etc...
