Alternative DB to FMP with preferably easy export/import to/from FMP?

I have some simple databases that I like to give to a friend who does not have FMP.  Can somebody advise me if there is a DB application that allows one to export date to or import data from FMP?  Or even better do a save as? 

It is important that the new DB can be edited so that my friend can add stuff or delete.  Also, if it is easy to create the DB and maintain it would be great - programmer skills are very limited. 

BTW.  It needs to be able to run on a Mac and be a standalone application.  Preferably Plug and play and easy to use.

Perhaps your friend can use FileMaker Go on his iPad? It’s free. He won’t be able to make any structural changes, but can add, edit data.
