Creating a Value List in FMP 12 that is limited by the value in a field

Featured Replies

I am trying to create a library catalog for folders containing my personal and professional paper records.

I have 8 filing cabinets containing 1-5 drawers for a total of 15 Locations.

When my wife or my secretary need to file a new folder,

  1. They know where the new folder should be filed, i.e., which Location or cabinet-specific drawer,
  2. They have a sense of the category under which the folder should be filed, but cannot be expected to know the exact category name, and
  3. They have the authority to Name the folder based on their general understanding of my prefered naming conventions.

I have been able to create a Value List, Locs, from a database with one field containing all 15 possible locations.

The challenge I have is creating a Value List, Cats, presumably from a database with two fields; i.e., Location and Categories, that only populates the dropdown list for Category in the database Catalog with those 2 or 3 specific categories that are filed in the chosen location.

I am sure this is easy to do, but I just cannot figure out how to do it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you want a conditional value list.

Thanks!

I will investigate that.

Fitch,

I followed your advice, learned lots of things, and successfully achieved my objective.

Thank you very much!
