Unexpected Background When Button Pressed

The button in the video (Add Alert Trigger) is grouped with the plus sign. Both are svg's and neither is set to display a background (square/gray) on press, hover, etc.. Anything I can do to keep the ugly gray square from showing behind the icon(s) when pressed? I've tried "Freeze" as well with no luck.

I tried recreating it but the application is so simple/fast, no background appears behind the button. I'm attaching a zoomed-in view of what I'm referring to as the square, gray color that appears when the button is pressed. The button is not set for any background color on hover, press, active, or inactive.

[shrug] You might just as well attach a picture of a car and ask why the engine won't start...

Then again, it might be something that someone has encountered and will recognize it.
