Is there a way to block spokes from syncing temporarily? A "switch" of some sort?

what I did to accomplish that is put a simple text file on the server with a 0 or a 1 in it.

Prior to the sync a script checks that file. If it's 1 it proceeds with the sync if it's 0 it does not.
