Sharing my db with others

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a database that I want to put on a CD and share with others. Is there a FMP viewer or something that I can put on the CD without putting the whole program on it? I don't know the correct terminology... packaging maybe? I can't find anything in the help under that term.

Thanks,Kathy

The best route I think is to have FM Developer and create a runtime. A runtime can operate independent of FM. Then you can use a setup creator to make an installer (this is not necessary, but it makes it neat).

Hopefully, you plan to sell this to someone, or else the expense of Dev and your effort will not be worth it!

The other option, that is not as expensive as purchasing the DEV version for the runtimme (which is really the best solution), is to simply share your database using the webpublishing feature built into the program. You can protect your data with the password option and only those authorized will be able to view and use the content.

And, whenever you update your database, the changes appear automatically.

You will need to decide what makes the best sense for what you are doing.

If you don't want to shell out $499 for a copy of FMP Developer...

And -

You want others just to play with your database for a short while to see if it's something they want to invest in.

You can have them download a free demo version of FMP from their website. Once they do this, they can open your files from your CD.

Don't forget - that unless you've used WinZip of StuffIt type application to compress your files, they'll be "Read Only" if they just copy them over from the CD. The user will have to right click each and uncheck "Read Only" on the files they've moved to their PC.

Also - if you just have one DB Solution that you want someone to put into a RunTime solution for you, I or someone else here might volunteer to do that for you with their copy of FMP Developer. Then if it's something you want to do a lot of, you might decide to invest in a copy.

Thats probably the best advice. I can do that for you, too if you want to contact me. However, you need "about" information with your contact info before I make it a runtime. You might want to make a help script also.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. the data is far from completed but it's on its way. Perhaps the webversion would work temporarily or the download you mentioned.
