one to many relationship problem

I have a problem, I am new to FM. I am developing a DB for an internal storage system. I have a unique ID for

I one to many self relationship is fine. Use a global field for the left side of your relationship and relate it to the "from project" field. The global is set to the project you desire to view, the records for this project can be viewed in a portal.

I have tried this but i am still finding that this does not work as the user needs to input the data, for the bands so this means that the data can not be displayed as a potal as the user needs to be able to input the data!!

can you plz give me an idiot proof step by step instructions on how to do this as, i am using a german vision of filemaker! i am devloping it for german cleints!!
