How to limit length of field display on Web

I have a text field that displays notes on a certain item. I only want to display the first line of the notes on the general listing page. then when the person clicks through to see more details they wil see the entire text field. I can display the whole text field but don't know how to limit it when needed.

One way is to use a Calculated field which extracts the first line of the text field. The other way is with some Javascript.
