October 18, 200223 yr Newbies Hi I'd like to get some feedback on setting up ssl to secure a filemaker pro solution. I need to secure an application (we use WC not Lasso) with SSl, secure certificate... The database and front end has been already developed (not by new!!) and contents secure information (pass, login and student marks) that could be easily be downloaded with webcompanion alone. At the moment we are running filemaker unlimited 5 on an old beige g3. We are setting up the new box running Jaguar (mac osX) and unlimited 6. Filemaker (http://www.filemaker.net/products/fmu_features6.html) says that unlimited can support SSL Is there any doc out there to help setting up ssl on Jaguar. Has anyone done that before I still don't know if we should be running Jaguar server or just client. How do we get ssl to work with Filemaker. Can Apache be running on the same box with mod_ssl on a different port. In theory we don't need apache for this box, but do we need it for the ssl bit cheers Frederic
October 18, 200223 yr You have to use web server with SSL and on that box will run Web Server Connector. That will point to your Unlimited(s). I do not think that this was changed in v. 6. IMHO it stays the same as in v. 5. On the page is written: Secure Socket Layer (SSL) Support Use the FileMaker Web Server Connector to take advantage of SSL technology built into powerful Web servers. With SSL, data passed between Web browsers and the Web server is encrypted for maximum security.
October 18, 200223 yr Author Newbies thanks but i am still a little confused (I don't have any experience with SSL). And i don't have inlimited 6 so i don'ty know what the connector does. So can you confirm me that's ok if we have: 1. Jaguar server not client with apache turned on ---does Web Server Connector uses modssl?? - what i want to try is to generate and sign our own certificate, described on this page: http://www.afp548.com/Articles/web/sslcert.html 2. Unlimited 6 to host all the filemaker templates and stuff 3. filemaker server to host the database 4. some hope that WC won't crash everyday like it does now Frederic
October 18, 200223 yr You need someone who knows the SSL server stuff. I know nothing about the MacX stuff. WSC will work as FM said. If your web server is listed, then you are OK. It is just Java Applet. You need Unlimited, but it can run on any compatible HW/SW. It doesn't have to be 6. Anything from 5 will do. The databases can be open directly in Unlimited. Only if you will have more Unlimited servers, you (maybe) need FM server. Or if you share databases for network and web. But first, get robust FM with solid Unlimited and WC. Our is running without restart from May 25th.
