Counting related child

I have a report that is created off of 2 files related by the job_no contained in each file. The application is for tracking repairs. The main file is job_hdr and the child is job_items. The report is created in the job_items file and is sorted by job_id. I cannot get a summary field to show me the count of jobs on this report. I need to know in which file to create the summary field.

This is a picture of the report if it helps in my lack of description.

The number 92 in the image below should be 2 but it is counting the total of customers in the header, not the found count of customers.

It looks like you ... might ... be mixing two different versions of count. The summary field count has NOTHING to do with relationships. It is used to return a count of non empty fields in the current field ... and ... in the case of subsummaries when sorted by a break field.

The COUNT function is how you count non-empty related fields. So if you have a record that is related to 6 child records. You can count the number of related records that have a value in a particular field.

You can Summarize a calculation field that has a COUNT function in it. However, I don't think you need to if I'm reading your post correctly.

FYI ... shameless plug ... we sell a 100 page 40+ examples guide to FileMaker calculations and functions. It's only $16.00, so it's cheaper than a large pizza and might help you out. You can find it at www.buyfmprostuff.com.
